CHAPTER TWELVE

Wednesday morning was going to be busy with the planning of the football game and the mapping out of the presentation with the kids. With less than two hours sleep, Matt was surprisingly energized for the day. It was two in the morning when he walked her to her car. And three by the time he got off the telephone talking. Neither wanted the connection made on yesterday broken. By seven, Matt was on the track with his team working out the plans for the fundraising football game.

“Coach.” Coco ran up next to him. “Morning. You know I ain’t no snitch, but I also have to look out for my people.”

“I get that. So, who’s in trouble?”

“Mac.”

Matt stopped running. “Run in place,” he instructed. “Talk.”

“Malone went by to check on Mac yesterday. His cousin and some of his boys had Mac cornered near his house hassling him about that code. Malone gave us a call and me and some of the team rolled over. We got Mac into his house. But we may not be there all the time. You know what I’m saying. He needs a ‘do not touch’ clause on him.”

“You have any info on the cousin or his boys?”

“One of his boys used to be on the basketball team during freshman year. But he didn’t come back to school the next year. Malone can tell you all their names. You know Coach, you might want to make Malone captain. He keeps tabs on everybody and makes sure we’re all straight.”

“I will take that under consideration.” Matt nodded. “Thanks for the info, Coco. I’ll take care of Mac.”

After his run, Matt went to his office, took his shower, then dressed for class. Before leaving he placed a call.

“Are you in Richmond?”

“On 95 heading that way.”

“Good, I have a situation that I think a roll-by is needed. Can you handle it?”

“Tell me the situation.”

Matt explained what he knew about Mac and the boys hassling him.

“I know just the man to handle that. Consider it done.”

“Appreciate it.”

Matt hung up the call then made his way to the detention room for day three.

“Morning Coach,” the kids all said as he walked into the room.

“You beat me to class?”

“We been working for about an hour now, Coach,” Coco said.

“Mac is writing the program so it will be ready by the time the discs get here,” Blayne explained. “I’m working on the script for the presentation.”

“Yeah, we need to be sure the summation matches the purpose. We can’t be up there rambling some off the wall shit.”

“Watch your language, Coco.”

“Sorry Coach.” Coco smiled. “But this is going to be good.”

Matt walked around to the desk to take a seat. There was a container in the chair.

“Oh yeah, Principal Ballard left that for you,” Blayne told him.

Matt picked up the container and could feel the heat from its contents. He sat the container on the desk, then read the card.

Sleep evaded me after talking with you last night. So I spent the morning preparing this for you.
